Mauritania  authorities says US anti-slavery visit ‘illegal’

The Mauritania authorities had on Saturday attacked the US anti-slavery campaigners denied entry into the country, saying their trip would violate the law of the land.

A local anti-slavery NGO stated that about a  dozen campaigners landed at the Nouakchott airport on Friday for a week-long visit but were denied visas.

Though, slavery had been abolished in Mauritania in 1981 but remains entrenched in a hereditary system of servitude.
