Gunmen attack another Anambra church, kill policeman, civilian

“My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen. It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it”.

Just seven days, gunmen struck again at the Assemblies of God Church on the Oguta road Onitsha, Anambra State killing one policeman and a civilian.

An eyewitness report that the gunmen briefly stopped at the Assemblies of God Church, on sighting the Policemen, they opened fire.

“The fire was too hot that the Police abandoned their patrol vehicle and fled.

“The gunmen went to the patrol van and took the gun belonging the Policeman they killed.

The eyewitness sighted two gunmen but wasn’t sure if they were more.

Gunmen on Sunday struck at the Assemblies of God Church on the Oguta road Onitsha, Anambra State killing one policeman and a civilian.

This is coming seven days after gunmen attacked St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu and killed no fewer than 13 persons and injured 27.

An eyewitness account told our correspondent that the gunmen had momentarily stopped at the Assemblies of God Church, but on sighting some policemen providing security at the church, opened fire on them.

“The gunmen were on a bike (Okada), they shot a policeman and took his rifle. While escaping they shot another Okada man and the passenger he was carrying.

“I saw two of the gunmen but I can’t say how many they are in number.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar confirmed the incident to journalists.

Mr. Garba said: “My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen. It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it”.

The commissioner confirmed that the hoodlums took away a rifle belonging to the dead policeman.
