Filter Trump out of your life with these browser add-ons

The Trump Filter, meanwhile, combs through any websites visited by the user and completely removes any references to the US leader. The Chrome filter’s three levels – from “mild” to “vindictive” – can be adjusted depending on how the user is feeling, removing just single references or entire pages on Trump.

The best place to seek refuge from the overwhelming deluge of news about US President Donald Trump might not be a remote island or cave, but the Internet itself.

Since the presidential inauguration in January, tens of thousands of users have installed web filters that either remove or change any references to the US leader to more pleasant things … like kittens.

Used by more than 70,000 people, Make America Kittens Again is a Chrome add-on that automatically replaces images of Trump with pictures of kittens.

With the filter installed, a headline on The Guardian newspaper’s website reading “Trump’s state visit to Britain put on hold” is accompanied by a picture of a fuzzy white kitten sitting on a couch. The actual text of the article underneath, however, remains unchanged.

The Chrome filter’s three levels – from “mild” to “vindictive” – can be adjusted depending on how the user is feeling, removing just single references or entire pages on Trump.

“In a political atmosphere where ascendance can be manufactured through attention, the only way to deflate Trump’s political star is through suffocation,” reads a description in the Chrome Web Store.

Trump has taken the same concept and brought it to mobile, removing any trace of the US leader from your iPhone, while Remove Donald Trump from Facebook is a Chrome extension that does exactly what its name suggests.

Even news apps have begun integrating options to pause Trump, with US-based Quartz news outlet adding a feature to its app called Trump Snooze that turns off notifications and news about Trump for 24 hours. But after that the floodgates open again.

CNN and other news station viewers, however, will have to wait on a filter for television. — dpa
